At a New York Family Court hearing, the judge will look at evidence presented by both parties and will make a decision based upon this evidence and information in accordance with the current legislature and case law on the subject at hand. The proper presentation of your case is crucial. A New York Family Court hearing lawyer can work to ensure that your interests and legal rights are protected, that evidence is correctly presented to the judge and that wrongful allegations are evidence are effectively disproven.

About Family Court Hearings

Family Court cases may be heard at any of the five courthouses in New York City: Kings (Brooklyn), Bronx, Queens, New York (Manhattan) and Richmond (Staten Island). A hearing may be held in front of a Family Court judge for most matters, but for support or paternity issues a support magistrate will oversee the hearing. If you have a Family Court hearing scheduled, it is crucial that you appear on time. If one party fails to appear, the judge or magistrate may decide to move forward without the missing party or may dismiss the case.

Most Family Court hearings are open to the public. The presiding judge or magistrate may choose to exclude the public from the hearing to protect the privacy of the interested parties. Free child care is provided at the courthouses in Bronx, New York, Queens and Kings Counties.
